Sex Selection

Scientist Charles Darwin, who developed the theory of evolution of species that is so essential for us to understand how life evolved on this planet and also nature's amazing capacity of adaptation and transformation, also developed another interesting theory about what is called sex selection.

ex selection is frequently confounded with natural selection but in fact there's one important different. While in natural selection the environmental circumstances are the primary factor that determines if an individual would be selected or not, in sex selection it becomes more a behavioral factor. Sex selection explains why there are so many species in which the male is responsible for mating and coupling. Accordingly with Darwin' theory of sex selection, females would be genetically programmed to look for "superior" mates to couple with, what creates the necessity for males to differentiate from the competitors. That's why accordingly with Darwin theories, the female sex is in general called the "limiting sex" while the male is called the "competitive sex". Both functions are essential for the reproduction of almost every species, as sex selection is necessary for evolution and continuing of life.

For us, sex selection may seem something distant that relates only with animals, but in fact we are also "controlled" for such natural power in a certain way. Despite the cultural patterns and fashion that may deeply influence our sex preferences, both men and women are somehow compelled to search for mates with very specific characteristics, regardless the cultural or behavioral background of the individuals.

More than just explaining why we seek certain physical attributes and behaviors, sex selection may reveal us much about why men and women react from different ways and have complete different attitudes when facing the same sexual situation. Sex selection may seem more subtle when it comes to the human race, but it's still very present and acting in every sexual decision we make.
