Sexual Selection

Sexual selection it's a term derived from the ideas of the scientist and naturalist Charles Darwin, who first developed the theory of evolution of the species.

Sexual selection is an evolutionary process described by Darwin in which one sex (called the competitive sex) starts to compete among themselves to gain access to the opposite sex (called the limiting sex). It is often confounded with the process of natural selection, but Darwin pointed that the attributes that develop through sexual selection have in general a negative effect on the survival of their bearers. Darwin also proposed that sexual secondary characteristics would be developed simply because females prefer to mate with those specific features, what characterizes the competition as the main characteristic of sexual selection. The winner gets the opposite sex and it's qualified as a "selected" individual, which characteristics are inherited by the species.

In most of the cases in the sexual selection process, the male is the competitive sex and the female the limiting sex. For that reason is more common to find animal species in which the male is responsible for mate-attraction signals and coupling rituals. Females are often genetically programmed to find a "superior" father for their offspring, and the "winners" of the sexual selection (which here can be viewed as a real competition) are the bearers of the secondary sexual characteristics that indicate a "superior" father.

In the human being, the sexual selection process may be more subtle, but it still very present. If we take away any fashionable tendencies and cultural values, women would be always likely to accept a man with very specific particularities, while men would be more likely to search for a specific pattern of female to mate.

By understanding sexual selection, we may learn a lot about our own sex-linked preferences and what our possible partners may be looking for. It's the same process that has being leading the evolution of many surviving species throughout time.
